September in Montreal: The Season for Business, Luxury, and Authentic Experiences

Architecture tour - Ruby Roy - 3

Few realise that September and October are the busiest months of the year for travellers in Montreal, not the summer. Conferences, corporate meetings, and international events fill the calendar. Cruise ships dock in the port for the stunning autumn foliage, and business and leisure travellers alike arrive from around the world.

If you are considering a private or bespoke tour, it is highly recommended to book well in advance to avoid disappointment during these peak months.

A Market-Lover’s Paradise

When I was a child, the leaves were already changing in September. Today, with the effects of global warming, the colours now shift only in early October, when they should be at their peak. September still feels like summer in Montreal, except that schools are back in session. Festivals continue for Montrealers, particularly on weekends, while weekdays are calmer with fewer crowds and families—making it the perfect time for luxury travellers seeking authentic neighbourhood walks and culinary discoveries.

Montreal’s Public Markets – My Market

Over the past two years I have visited public markets across North America—Québec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver—and none come close to the vibrancy and authenticity of Montreal’s markets, with my market at the very top of the list.

This is not your small farmers’ market open once a week. In Montreal, when you say “public market,” it means food. Only food. No crafts, souvenirs, junk, or fast-food outlets. Instead, you find fresh, authentic produce sourced directly from local farmers, chefs, and food lovers, seven days a week from 7:00 to 19:00.

Ninety per cent of the products are sold by growers within 30 km of Montreal. Corn freshly picked that morning, heritage tomatoes from the Lauzon family, exquisite greens from the Birri brothers, apples from Robert, and countless other producers whose names I’ve known all my life.

The market I call my own is the largest open-air market in North America open year-round, and it’s more than a place to shop—it’s part of my identity. I grew up just minutes away and still live in my childhood home. The vendors have known me since childhood; many see me daily, sometimes twice a day.

This is why when you visit with me, you are not just taking a market tour—you are welcomed as a local. No other licensed private guide or Montreal expert has the same long-standing relationship with the producers. This is what makes the experience extraordinary, authentic, and truly unforgettable.

Culinary Highlights – My Restaurant Picks for September

Montreal’s restaurant scene is a culinary treasure, with chefs weaving local produce into creative global cuisines. Here are my personal recommendations for September—all places I return to time and again:

  • Satay Brothers – A beloved spot for Singaporean and Malaysian flavours using fresh Montreal ingredients. Perfect for lunch at the Atwater Market or dinner in their lively restaurant—an experience with four neighbourhoods to discover.
  • Street Monkey – My favourite for Cambodian cuisine. Why not join me for a neighbourhood discovery tour and end the day with dinner here?
  • Pichai – A Thai restaurant blending traditional techniques with local produce to create sublime, flavourful dishes in another vibrant neighbourhood.
  • HÀ Vietnamese – Ideal after an evening walking tour; let’s end the night in a stylish Montreal favourite.

For me, it has always been much more than public transport. It is a passionate relationship only those  close to me are well aware of.
